Spondylarthrosis refers more to osteoarthritis of the small vertebral joints; vertebral joint arthrosis and facet syndrome often describe painful facet joints. As a rule, surgery is only considered in cases of severe neurological deficits and ineffectiveness of conservative therapies. In severe cases, surgical therapy may be necessary to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves, for example by removing bony outgrowths.
